- AKERS, JAMES FRED - age 78, of Knoxville, died 4:55 p.m. Monday, April 14, 1997, at U.T. Medical Center. Member and deacon of Smithwood Baptist Church and the Glad Hand Bible Class. He was a charter member and deacon of Second Baptist Church. Member of Bright Hope Lodge No. 557 F.& A. M., veteran of World War II. Retired from Norfolk-Southern Railroad after 30 years of service. Survivors: wife, Jeanette Turner Akers, Knoxville; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Randy Thornton, Kingston; Debbie and Billy Davis, Knoxville; granddaughter, Stephanie Wells and husband Jamie, Knoxville; grandson, Justin Thornton, Kingston. Funeral service 8 p.m. Wednesday at Stevens
Chapel, Rev. Thomas E. Gatton and Dr. C. Glenn Sullivan officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m. Thursday at Highland Memorial Cemetery for an 11 a.m. graveside service and interment. Pallbearers will be nephews. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at Broadway.
