- Lois Johnson Cate, 87, of Crossville passed away Wednesday morning, March 19, 1997 from complications of a stroke.
A retired teacher, Mrs. Cate spent her adult years caring for family, friends and students as she encouraged them to be all that they could be. She loved to read and shared her love of learning with everyone around her. Those who knew Mrs. Cate found her to be friendly and generous with her devotion of time and service. She had a keen interest in and knowledge of what was going on in the community and the world.
Mrs. Cate taught at York Agricultural Institute (YAI) in Jamestown, for 11 years, eight as English teacher and three as librarian. While at YAI, students showed their appreciation and admiration for her by dedicating the 1961 YAI annual to her.
Upon leaving YAI in 1964, she was quoted as saying, "Since I am a member of the first graduating class at YAI and the first graduate of the school to teach here, I can truly say a part of me will always be with YAI. The many happy and pleasant memories, and love for my devoted friends here will be with me always."
After leaving YAI, she continued her career as librarian at Cumberland County High School for ten years before retiring in 1974. She was at her happiest when helping others find resources for learning and encouraging their desire for knowledge.
During her teaching years, Mrs. Cate taught every grade level in elementary school except for the eight grade. She taught at Red Hill, York, and Allardt elementary schools in Fentress County; and one year in Lee County, Texas. Other positions were music teacher, supervisor of Fentress County Schools and caseworker with the Department of Welfare. She often said her work as caseworker was one of her most meaningful lifetime experiences.
Mrs. Cate graduated from YAI in 1927, and Cumberland University in 1932. Dedicated to using her gifts and talents, she served as church organist for the First United Methodist Church in Jamestown and also the First United Methodist Church of Crossville, where she was still a member. After retirement, she enjoyed being a member of the Cumberland County Retired Teachers Association.

Cate Jr., of Knoxville; a sister, Alice Harrison of Crossville; brother, Willard Johnson of Houston, Texas; and granddaughters, Stephanie Noble and Stacy Cate, both of Knoxville.
