- EVANS, HOWARD M. - 82 of Naples, Fla., formerly of Knoxville, died June 2, 2005 surrounded by his family at the Frances Georgeson Hospice House in Naples. Born in Galax, Va., he was the son of the late Rev. Robert Lee Evans and Blanche Bradley Evans of Knoxville. In addition to his beloved wife of 61 years, Carol Pugh Evans, he is survived by their three children: Larry H. married to Merry Butler of Atlanta, Ga., H. Stephen married to Colette Hildabrand of Lancaster, Pa. and Suzanne Evans Ziegler of Marietta, Ga. He was blessed with seven wonderful grandchildren, Kristi Leigh Ziegler, Janie Elizabeth Ziegler, Sarah Ashley Evans, Bradley Butler Evans, Evans William Ziegler, Lauren Edwards Evans and Andrew Lee Evans, and four sisters: Edith helsley of Beaverton, Ore., Mage Neblett and Roberta Luttrell both of Knoxville and Doris Lanning of Charlotte, NC. He attended the University of Tennessee until inducted into the Army. He served in the 258th Engineer Combat Battalion assigned to the 101st. Division on the European continent where his battalion built bridges usually ahead of the front lines. He was an associate of the JC Penney Company, Inc. for 42 years. He began his career at the JCPenney store on Gay Street retiring in New York in 1982 as Senior Vice President and Directory of Corporate Marketing. There he demonstrated vividly that JCPenney's greatest resource is its own people. He was a gentleman who never lost the common touch. He was the moving force behind and particularly proud of the JCPenney Golf Classic which raised millions for Suncoast (Tampa-St. Petersburg) Fla. area charities over the years. A memorial service was held in Naples, Fla. on Saturday afternoon, June 4th at 4 p.m. at the Moorings Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Dr. Charles Cary officiating. A memorial service will be held in Atlanta on Tuesday morning June 7 at 11 a.m. at Arlington Chapel-H.M. Patterson & Sons 173 Allen Road, Atlanta, Ga. 404-851-9900. Interment will be at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Hospice of Naples, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, Fla. 34105.
