- Piper, Betty Ruth Newman, born July 11, 1925, passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2013. Betty was a retiree of South Central Bell Telephone Company and a long-time American Red Cross Volunteer and Instructor, American Heart Association Instructor and member of the Board of Directors with the Knoxville Volunteer Rescue Squad. She was the recipient of many awards for time and dedication to these organizations. She was preceded in death by parents, Mack and Grace Newman; husband, Morgan Piper; son, Dennis Piper; and sister, Evelyn Scalf. Betty is survived by daughters, Peggy Blevins, Carolyn Irwin and husband, Wayne; son, John Piper and wife, Cathy; grandchildren: Susan Irwin, Sandra Parker, Samantha Bradley, Jenifer King, David Blevins, Wendy Irwin, and John Piper, Jr.; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert Newman and Mack Newman, Jr. Family will receive friends on Saturday, February 23, 2013 from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM at Magnolia Avenue Methodist Church, 2700 Magnolia Avenue with the Memorial Service to follow, Rev.
