    • Occupation: UNDERWOOD FAMILY TANNERY Kodak, Tennessee The sight of an early tan yard can be seen on the south side of the Tuckahoe Creek Bridge on Douglas Dam Road. It was known to have been in operation before 1860 and continued production until 1920. According to records still in the possession of the Underwood family, the Tannery was probably started by William Ramy Underwood, who was born September 6, 1816, and died March 7, 1887. His son, Enoch Pleasant Underwood, born December 9, 1838, operated the family tannery for many years. Using native bark from the area, he prepared leather into shoes, harnesses, horse collars, saddles and other leather goods for market. The horse collars which he made, "the half Sweeny," were much in demand. Some of the tools he used are now on display in a Knoxville (TN) museum. Pleas Underwood was known for the fine leather he tanned. He also raised and twisted a fire cured tobacco, which he sold along with his leather goods from a covered wagon. His brother, William Alexander Underwood, drove a horse and wagon into Knoxville once a week to deliver goods. He had a Blacksmith shop at his home just south of the tan yard. Pleasant and his wife, Susan Pollard Underwood, had twelve children. He was affectionately known as Grandpa Coodle by his grandchildren. He was a Mason and charter member of French Broad Lodge #588. Pleasant died April 4, 1928. His brother, Alex, died September 30, 1923. Both are buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery.     Frank Pollard is mentioned in the Northview Homecoming 1986 program as having run a mill with his brother, Jesse in the mid 1920s.

    Frank Pollard was a member of the Beech Springs Baptist Church. (Beech Springs Baptist Church was organized 12 May 1883 with 18 original members. On the second Saturday in June, 1883, the first sermon in the newly organized church was preached by Rev. Wm McPherson. Frank Pollard is listed as being received by experience and approved for baptism.     Notes:

    A few years ago, my father, Leroy Hancock gave me a photo of a corn mill that he had carefully wrapped in Saran Wrap and had attached a note saying the mill was owned by his grandfather, Jesse Pollard. He had written that the picture was taken around 1920. Several years later, Carrie Johnson Swan gave me a program of the Northview Community Homecoming in 1986. Reference is made in the program - Frank and Jess Pollard had a mill during the mid 1920's.

    February, 1999 -- I met Stella Underwood, who had told me previously on the phone how she remembered driving by Uncle Jess' (Pollard) mill and seeing water dripping from the flume. On my first visit with Stella I took her a copy of the picture and she said she was having it enlarged and stated "Oh, I can still see that water leaking from the flume." Stella described Jesse Pollard as "a very congenial, always smiling man." - DeAnna C. Hancock-Cooley

    My great grandfather, James Frank Pollard, had a brother Jesse who was born 14 Nov 1864 and married Malinda Cate. James Frank is buried in Beech Springs Cemetery in Kodak. Their father was James C. Pollard and their mother was Synthia (or Cynthia) Cate and they were married 3 Aug 1842 in Sevier County. James C. Pollard was born in Virginia (I think about 1820) and then shows up in the Sevier County census (this lists his state of birth as VA). e-mail from Tnhilbly (Sue Chrisman) dated 31 May 1998.

    The Post Office in Kodak began in 1892. At that time, Harvey N. Underwood was granted a charter for a new post office to be located in a store that he was building. Since he was to be the first postmaster, Harvey Underwood was to decide what name to give this new post office. As the deadline to inform postal officials neared, a name still had not been selected. One Sunday Harvey and his wife sat around the house most of the day trying to decide what name to give the new post office. About dark that same day, Harvey left the house and walked toward the new store. As he walked, he saw a small box lying on the ground. He kicked it over and saw the word "KODAK."     Feb. 1999: Having seen no data on Effie Pollard, I asked my dad, (Leroy Hancock, Sr) if he remembered Effie. "Oh yes," he replied. Effie was speech/hearing impaired. A very pretty young lady. There was a child, a son, born out of wedlock. Effie Pollard never married.

    In another conversation with Kathleen Whitaker, (Feb., 1999) Kathleen stated that Effie lived with her brother, Monroe Pollard, after the death of her parents.

    Fannie Mae Patterson also remembers Effie. According to family history, Fannie states that the homeplace (a quarry) was deeded to Monroe for caring for Effie after the death of their father, Jesse Pollard. The child Effie bore was rumored to be fathered by a relative (a cousin).

    SMITH, Mrs. Mayme Pollard - age 73, of 128 Pickering Street, passed away at the home early Wednesday morning. She was a member of Victor Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors: husband, J. M. Smith, Knoxville; daughter, Mrs. Ruby Webster, Knoxville; granddaughter, Mrs. Dianne Constance, Oak Ridge; grandsons, William A. Merrill, Charles Webster, Lester Webster; sisters, Mrs. Birdie Hancock, Mrs. Emma Hancock, Mrs. Georgia Glenn, Mrs. Lizzie Fox, all of Knoxville; Mrs. Velma Stallings, Strawberry Plains; several nieces and nephews. Services 2 p.m. Friday McCarty Mortuary Chapel, Rev. Bill Luallen, Rev. Thurman M. Pate officiating. Interment Pollards Cemetery. Pallbearers; Adam, Buford, Junior and Fate Hancock, David Norris, H. L. Smith. Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at McCarty's.

    Mayme Pollard Smith, 73, Knoxville, grandmother of Mrs. Jerry Constance, 117 E. Magnolia Lane died Wednesday morning at her home. She had been in declining health for several years.
    Mrs. Smith was born and reared in Beech Springs, a small community near Kodak. She attended the Beech Springs public schools.
    A member of Victor Freewill Baptist Church in Knoxville, Mrs. Smith was active in church work and enjoyed growing flowers.
    She is survived by her husband, J. M. Smith; one daughter, Mrs. Ruby Webster, Knoxville; five sisters, Mrs. Paine (Payne) Hancock, Mrs. Bruce Hancock, Mrs. Sid Fox, Mrs. George Glenn, all of Knoxville, and Mrs. Albert Stallings, Strawberry Plains; and four grandchildren including Mrs. Constance.
    Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at McCarty Mortuary in Knoxville with the Rev. Bill Luallen, pastor of the Victor Freewill Baptist Church, and the Rev. Thurman M. Pate, pastor of the Faith Freewill Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at the family cemetery in Kodak. (Pollards)
