Feb. 1999: Having seen no data on Effie Pollard, I asked my dad, (Leroy Hancock, Sr) if he remembered Effie. "Oh yes," he replied. Effie was speech/hearing impaired. A very pretty young lady. There was a child, a son, born out of wedlock. Effie Pollard never married.

In another conversation with Kathleen Whitaker, (Feb., 1999) Kathleen stated that Effie lived with her brother, Monroe Pollard, after the death of her parents.

Fannie Mae Patterson also remembers Effie. According to family history, Fannie states that the homeplace (a quarry) was deeded to Monroe for caring for Effie after the death of their father, Jesse Pollard. The child Effie bore was rumored to be fathered by a relative (a cousin).

Mayme Pollard Smith, 73, Knoxville, grandmother of Mrs. Jerry Constance, 117 E. Magnolia Lane died Wednesday morning at her home. She had been in declining health for several years.
Mrs. Smith was born and reared in Beech Springs, a small community near Kodak. She attended the Beech Springs public schools.
A member of Victor Freewill Baptist Church in Knoxville, Mrs. Smith was active in church work and enjoyed growing flowers.
She is survived by her husband, J. M. Smith; one daughter, Mrs. Ruby Webster, Knoxville; five sisters, Mrs. Paine (Payne) Hancock, Mrs. Bruce Hancock, Mrs. Sid Fox, Mrs. George Glenn, all of Knoxville, and Mrs. Albert Stallings, Strawberry Plains; and four grandchildren including Mrs. Constance.

He was a member of French Broad Valley Baptist Church. He was a Veteran of World War II, a member of the French Broad Masonic Lodge and the Kodak Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of the Sevier County Court for 12 years. Through the years, I have heard my father and aunt (Melton's brother and sister) mention their baby brother, Melton, with a great deal of softness. He was remembered as a big, healthy, fat baby prior to his sudden illness. His older brother, Leroy would play his guitar and sing to Melton and his sister, Sallie Mae remembers rocking him.

It was believed Melton died of whooping cough. He was buried by Enoch Undertaker at Pollard Cemetery in Kodak. After his death, his mother, Bertha Pollard, is remembered walking to the cemetery, approx 2-3 miles every day, "rain, snow, sleet or shine."

Ruby Mae Huffaker Webster, 73, formerly of Knoxville, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, in the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Prior to entering the hospital she had been a resident of Regency Health Care Center in Norris since April.
She was the mother of Dianne Webster (Mrs. Robert) May of 106 Osage Road, a teacher's assistant at Robertsville Junior High School. Mrs. Webster had lived with her daughter and son-in-law at various times before she became a resident of the nursing home.
Mrs. Webster was born in Kodak and came to live in Knoxville as a young woman. She was a member of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church of Knoxville and had enjoyed reading, raising flowers and vegetables and canning the vegetables. She was also an expert at quilting, knitting, sewing and embroidering her daughter says.
In addition to her local daughter, Mrs. Webster is survived by a son, William A. Merritt of Copperas Cove, Texas; two stepsons, Lester S. Webster Sr. of Helenwood and Charles E. Webster of Knoxville; a number of grandchildren including Jennifer and Melissa May, both of Oak Ridge, Laura Johnson, Lester S. Webster Jr., Donna Reed and Kelly Webster, all of Knoxville; several great-grandchildren including Lester S. Webster III of Knoxville; and an aunt, Martha Clifton of Knoxville.
The funeral was to be at 2 p.m. today, Jan 12, in the chapel of Stevens Mortuary of Knoxville, with the Rev. James McCluskey officiating. Burial was to be in Pollard Cemetery.

Ronnie Ray Ogle, 24, Terry Ogle, 31, and Ted Ogle, 20, all of Douglas Dam Road in Kodak, were charged with the first-degree murder of J.B. Whitaker of New Market.

Whitaker, 61, was shot to death Monday morning at his business, Whittaker's Auto Parts, an Asheville Highway junkyard. Robbery was the apparent motive, authorities said.

The Ogles were arrested early Friday by Birmingham, Ala., police who had been contacted by authorities in Jefferson County. Officers confiscated guns and knives.

Among the firearms was a .25-caliber semiautomatic handgun allegedly used in the murder. District Attorney General Al Schmutzer confirmed the victim had been shot several times. The trio had been to the business on several occasions, according to Jefferson county Sheriff Doug Quarles. Whittaker was known to carry large amounts of cash.

When his body was found, investigators discovered Whittaker had written a license plate number on the palm of his hand. That number was traced to a Pontiac Firebird owned by Terry Ogle, authorities said. Quarles said Whittaker frequently called the Sheriff's Department for a check of a vehicle if he was suspicious of the driver.

The three brothers were arraigned Friday before Jefferson County General Sessions Judge Max Moore, who scheduled a preliminary hearing April 11 and ordered the trio held without bond.

They had to appear Friday afternoon at an arraignment in Grainger County, where they have been charged with two counts each of attempted murder in connection with a Monday morning shooting. Sheriff Bobby Whitt said the three were joined by two other people and went to the residence of Judy Hurt. They are accused of opening fire while she slept with her granddaughter, Haley Olson, 2.

J. B. (Fireball) Whitaker, age 61, of New Market, passed away suddenly Monday, March 31, 1997. He was owner/operator of J. B. Whitaker Auto Parts. He is survived by his daughters, Debra Whitaker and Vickie Whitaker, both of Jefferson City; sons, Johnny, David, and Bobby Whitaker, all of New Market; seven grandchildren; sisters, Kathleen Lowe of new Market, Christine Elder and Thelma Vineyard both of Knoxville; brother, Clyde Whitaker of Dandridge; several nieces and nephews. The family received friends Wednesday at Farrar Funeral Home in Dandridge prior to the funeral service. The interment service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 3, at Pleasant Grove Piney Cemetery
