    Henrietta Jenkins, age 91, of Jefferson City, Tenn., passed away Aug. 6, 2012.
    She spent most of her childhood in Middlesboro, Ky., but lived in Fonde, Ky., during her high-school years. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City, where she had served as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher and where she taught a Bible study group once a month until recently. She loved poetry and often interspersed relevant poetic passages as she taught. She graduated magna cum laude from Carson-Newman College where she was also a member of the A Cappella Choir. She did her graduate work at the University of Tennessee and was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. She taught in the English Department of Carson-Newman for 30 years, serving as department coordinator for 10 of those years.
    She traveled extensively throughout Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Israel and also enjoyed visiting several countries in Europe, touring England twice.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, Arlie and Vida Jenkins; sisters, Gladys Hensley and Bertie Bostic; and brother, Arlie Gene Jenkins.
    She is survived by sister, Ruth Friar of Oak Ridge; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Earl Breazeale of Knoxville, and Joyce and Bill Nicely of Powell; many nieces and nephews; many grandnieces and grandnephews; and many great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. Also survived by her special friend, Lucy Petre, and her family. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers and her nieces as honorary pallbearers.
    The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, at First Baptist Church of Jefferson City with services immediately following. A graveside service will be conducted at Oak Ridge Memorial Park at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012.
    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.
    Farrar Funeral Home in Jefferson City, Tenn., is in charge of arrangements.
