    • Occupation: UNDERWOOD FAMILY TANNERY Kodak, Tennessee The sight of an early tan yard can be seen on the south side of the Tuckahoe Creek Bridge on Douglas Dam Road. It was known to have been in operation before 1860 and continued production until 1920. According to records still in the possession of the Underwood family, the Tannery was probably started by William Ramy Underwood, who was born September 6, 1816, and died March 7, 1887. His son, Enoch Pleasant Underwood, born December 9, 1838, operated the family tannery for many years. Using native bark from the area, he prepared leather into shoes, harnesses, horse collars, saddles and other leather goods for market. The horse collars which he made, "the half Sweeny," were much in demand. Some of the tools he used are now on display in a Knoxville (TN) museum. Pleas Underwood was known for the fine leather he tanned. He also raised and twisted a fire cured tobacco, which he sold along with his leather goods from a covered wagon. His brother, William Alexander Underwood, drove a horse and wagon into Knoxville once a week to deliver goods. He had a Blacksmith shop at his home just south of the tan yard. Pleasant and his wife, Susan Pollard Underwood, had twelve children. He was affectionately known as Grandpa Coodle by his grandchildren. He was a Mason and charter member of French Broad Lodge #588. Pleasant died April 4, 1928. His brother, Alex, died September 30, 1923. Both are buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery.     • Occupation: UNDERWOOD FAMILY TANNERY Kodak, Tennessee The sight of an early tan yard can be seen on the south side of the Tuckahoe Creek Bridge on Douglas Dam Road. It was known to have been in operation before 1860 and continued production until 1920. According to records still in the possession of the Underwood family, the Tannery was probably started by William Ramy Underwood, who was born September 6, 1816, and died March 7, 1887. His son, Enoch Pleasant Underwood, born December 9, 1838, operated the family tannery for many years. Using native bark from the area, he prepared leather into shoes, harnesses, horse collars, saddles and other leather goods for market. The horse collars which he made, "the half Sweeny," were much in demand. Some of the tools he used are now on display in a Knoxville (TN) museum. Pleas Underwood was known for the fine leather he tanned. He also raised and twisted a fire cured tobacco, which he sold along with his leather goods from a covered wagon. His brother, William Alexander Underwood, drove a horse and wagon into Knoxville once a week to deliver goods. He had a Blacksmith shop at his home just south of the tan yard. Pleasant and his wife, Susan Pollard Underwood, had twelve children. He was affectionately known as Grandpa Coodle by his grandchildren. He was a Mason and charter member of French Broad Lodge #588. Pleasant died April 4, 1928. His brother, Alex, died September 30, 1923. Both are buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery.     A few years ago, my father, Leroy Hancock gave me a photo of a corn mill that he had carefully wrapped in Saran Wrap and had attached a note saying the mill was owned by his grandfather, Jesse Pollard. He had written that the picture was taken around 1920. Several years later, Carrie Johnson Swan gave me a program of the Northview Community Homecoming in 1986. Reference is made in the program - Frank and Jess Pollard had a mill during the mid 1920's.

    February, 1999 -- I met Stella Underwood, who had told me previously on the phone how she remembered driving by Uncle Jess' (Pollard) mill and seeing water dripping from the flume. On my first visit with Stella I took her a copy of the picture and she said she was having it enlarged and stated "Oh, I can still see that water leaking from the flume."     Knoxville, Tennessee, Commodore took sick with pneumonia and died. His cousin, Ambrose Underwood, a steamboat captain for Oliver King Company, was given the use of the steamboat for the funeral. The boat left the Market Street landing at 6:30 on Sunday morning for the burial at Pollards Cemetery in Sevier county. For more details, see Knoxville Journal December 13, 1979. Page 1, section C.
