UNDERWOOD, KATHLEEN (KAY) RAY - passed away on Friday, November 6th, 2009 following a long battle with respiratory illness. Kay was born on April 3rd, 1923 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. She was married to the late Benjamin (Ben) B. Underwood of East Knoxville. Kay was a former member of McCalla Avenue Baptist, Chilhowee Hills Baptist and her current membership was at Wallace Memorial Baptist. She was residing at Parkview Independent Living in Fountain City. Kay and Ben met during World War II while Ben was serving in the U.S. Army. They celebrated their 57th anniversary on April 15th, 2001 before Ben's passing in March of 2002. Kay worked for several years at the Burlington flower shop (now Petree's Florist) before becoming affiliated with the Post Office Credit Union and finally served as the manager of the U.T. Credit Union, retiring from there. Kay was an avid reader, crossword puzzle enthusiast, and a Jeopardy junkie. She also played a mean game of Scrabble and was an accomplished bridge player. She was the life of the party and could write rhyming verse with ease. The world, and particularly her family, will certainly miss this wonderful person. She leaves behind: her daughter: Benita Davis; a son: Steve Underwood and his wife Kathi; grandchildren: Traci Hejna and her husband, Sean, Greg Caldwell and his wife, Lisa, Jason Underwood and his wife, Bethany, Josh Underwood, Maria Basting and her husband, Casey, Kristen Osborne, and Lacy Kight and her husband Dylan. She also had several great-grandchildren: Kristin and Allison Hejna, Lilly and Evan Caldwell, Sadie Rose Underwood, Emmaline Grace Underwood, Evie Elise Basting and Gavin Osborne. She also had several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition, she had "family" at her residence in Fountain City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to St. Jude Children's Hospital. The family will receive friends in the Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel from 6:00 P.M. - 7:30 P.M. on Monday, November 9th, 2009. A service will follow with Rev. Kent Williams officiating. Family and friends will meet at Lynnhurst Cemetery at 10:45 A.M. Tuesday for an interment service at 11:00 A.M. Arrangements by Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel. www.lynnhurstchapel.com
