A retired teacher, Mrs. Cate spent her adult years caring for family, friends and students as she encouraged them to be all that they could be. She loved to read and shared her love of learning with everyone around her. Those who knew Mrs. Cate found her to be friendly and generous with her devotion of time and service. She had a keen interest in and knowledge of what was going on in the community and the world.

Mrs. Cate taught at York Agricultural Institute (YAI) in Jamestown, for 11 years, eight as English teacher and three as librarian. While at YAI, students showed their appreciation and admiration for her by dedicating the 1961 YAI annual to her.

Upon leaving YAI in 1964, she was quoted as saying, "Since I am a member of the first graduating class at YAI and the first graduate of the school to teach here, I can truly say a part of me will always be with YAI. The many happy and pleasant memories, and love for my devoted friends here will be with me always."
