1	According to her daughter, Blannie, Etta was interviewed by Lowell Blanchard who was a local radio personality on a show called the "Midday Merry Go Round". Etta was a strong Democrat. Lowell asked her what she would be if she wasn't a Democrat. She replied, "I'd be ashamed". Her granddaughter, LaVerne remembers that Etta was a compassionate person. She could never say no to people in need. She had a large house Knoxville on Magnolia Avenue near the railroad tracks. Once a hobo stopped at her back door and asked for a hand-out. She gave him something to eat and drink . Word spread through out the railroad community of her hospitality. Soon, rail workers and rail passengers were stopping at her door when they were in the Knoxville area. There were so many people that she converted her large home into a boarding house and started renting rooms. LaVerne remembers the large breakfasts that were prepared for the boarders. 3	Knoxville News Sentinel, August 8, 1992 Knox native who ran state park after his military career dies. William "Bill" Cornwell, native Knoxvillian and superintendent of the Tims Ford State Park at Tullahoma, died Thursday at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville of an apparent heart attack. He was 63 and a retired Army lieutenant colonel. Mr Cornwell graduated from Knoxville High School in 1947. He was quarterback of the school's football team. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in labor relations in 1952 and entered the Army. Mr. Cornwell served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars and was awarded several medals for bravery, including the Legion of Merit for helicopter rescue misions in Vietman. He also served as an aide with the Chinese Nationalist Army in Formosa and was in charge of establishing helicopter forces for the Shah of Iran. Mr. Cornwell retired from the Army in 1973 and took a job with the Tennessee Department of Conservation as the superintendent of Pickwick State Park. He was later chosen to develop and oversee the state park. Mr. Cornwell is survived by his wife, Jane Riddel of Tullahoma; mother, Blana Ruth Cornwell of Knoxville; sister Laverne Rubenstein of Orlando; sons, Gregory Scott Cornwell of Chicago and Lawrence Dean Cornwell of Murfreesboro; daughters, Sarah Gene Cornwell of Winchester, Mass., and Martha Ellen Cornwell of Tullahoma; and four grandchildren. 7	GARRETT, MITZI LENEE - age 41, passed away on August 23, 2010 at U.T. Medical Center. She was born August 9, 1969 in Oak Ridge, TN. Mitzi was a Physical Therapist Assistant for Mercy Healthcare Systems. She was preceded in death by grandparents, Joseph Boyd and Trula Underwood and Oll and Lizzie (Romine) Cate. 9	MCCLOUD, GLADYS L. - age 80, of Halls, passed away Friday October 19, 2007. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. She was retired as a dental assistant and from St. Mary's Auxiliary. 10	OBITUARY EVANS, R. JOE - age 65, of Knoxville passed away July 30, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospice. He was a member of Park West Church of God. Joe was a popular gospel singer in the Knoxville area. He worked in ministry at local prisons and was active in a children's out reach program K.I. C. K.O. Joe served in the United States Army Reserve. He was proud of his heritage and was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans to honor the memory of his ancestors who served in both sides of the Civil War. He is preceded in death by parents Woodrow Franklin, Sr. and Evelyn Ruth Evans. 12	OBITUARY SHEPHERD, LENARD L. - age 74, of Powell, passed away on Tuesday evening at the St. Mary's Residential Hospice in Knoxville. Mr. Shepherd was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman Lawton and Mary Jane Huddleston Shepherd; brother, Cecil Shepherd; and sister, Edith Manis. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Marjorie Evans Shepherd; two daughters, Sharon Malloy and husband Joe of Franklin, TN, and Cindy Elwood and husband Todd of Thompson's Station, TN; 3 grandsons, Joseph, Jacob, and Joshua Malloy; 2 nephews, 1 niece and many other relatives and friends. Mr. Shepherd retired from the Knox County School System in 1991 after 34 years of serving as both teacher and Principal. He was a member of Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. An avid fisherman and outdoorsman, he taught the Hunters' Safety Course for many years. 15	Obituary: HENSLEY, GLADYS MARIE (JENKINS) - 85, of Powell, passed away Tuesday, December 23, after a period of declining health. She was the daughter of the late Arlie and Vida Ellen DeMarcus Jenkins. Mrs. Hensley grew up in Kentucky and graduated from Knoxville Business College. She worked in a number of secretarial and managerial positions, including Fort Sheridan, Illinois during World War II; the Credit Bureau in Harlan, Kentucky; and Management Services, Inc. in Oak Ridge. She was preceded in death by: her husband of almost 59 years, James Anderson Hensley, Sr.; her brother Arlie Gene Jenkins and her grandson Jacob Farris also preceded her in death. She is survived by: her two sons, James Anderson Hensley, Jr. and his wife Judy of Bryson City, NC, and Rev. David Michael Hensley and wife Lynne of Newport, TN, and two daughters, Linda H. Dills and her husband William of Bryson City, NC, and Jane H. Vittorio and her husband Michael of Charlotte, NC. She had nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Henrietta Jenkins of Jefferson City, Bertie Bostic and husband Paul of Clinton, Ruth Friar of Knoxville, Elizabeth Breazeale and husband Earl of Oak Ridge, and Joyce Nicely and husband Bill of Powell, TN. 16	OBITUARY: PHIPPS, CAROLYN ANN SHREVE - of Knoxville, passed away Monday, June 30, 2008. She worked, studied, and was active in the United Methodist Church her whole life. She was a member of the National Educational Association, along with being involved in Project Linus. She served for over 30 years as an elementary school librarian in Southwestern Virginia. 20	Zella Jennings Cook Hudson, age 96, born July 29, 1918 of Clinton passed away July 23, 2015. She was a member of Demory Baptist Church in Lafollette. 37	Carl was in the service during WW II as an artillery man with the 77th infantry division in the Pacific theater. Carl worked at coal mines in TN before and after the service. Carl moved his family to Dayton in 1954. Carl worked for many years and eventually retired from employment with the city of Dayton, OH. Mary Pauline says that Carl was the clown of the family and made everyone laugh. He contracted chickenpox from his granddaughter which then turned into shingles and his health rapidly deteriorated afterward.
