    Army Reservists receive awards

    Four awards have been won by active and former members of the 489th Civil Affairs Co., U. S. Army Reserve, and the unit commander has been promoted to lieutenant colonel.
    Karl W. Haff, 7539 Lancashire Boulevard, Powell, was promoted. He is a specialist in the Radioisotope Development Department, Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
    Brig. Gen. William Tidwell, commander of the 290th Military Police Brigade, Nashville, presents the awards to (from lert), Le. Colonel Roland Prince (retired), chancellor of Anderson County, meritorious service medal; CW4 Danah Carl Smith, 4800 Parva Road, supervisor of general services for Knox County; First Sgt. William A. Johnson, 234 Chicamauga Avenue, sevretary to Machinist Union Local 555; and Sgt First Class Anton F. Walcqyk (retired), Powell, all of whom were presented with the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service.

    WALCZYK, ETHEL M. EVANS - of Powell, passed away August 16, 1999, at her home. Member of First Baptist Church of Powell. She retired after 30 years of teaching in Powell Elementary School. Survived by husband, Anton F. Walczyk; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Louie Lusk and Jeanee and Stephen Zirkle; grandchildren, Natasha and David Lusk and Alyson and Jennifer Zirkle; brother, Oscar Evans; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Powell with the service to follow at 8 p.m. Revs. Phil Jones and Jerry Tallent officiating. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 a.m. Friday at the gravesite at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens for a 10 a.m. graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Powell's Building Fund or Missions Fund, 7706 Ewing Rd., Powell, TN 37849. Arrangements by McCarty's Woodhaven Chapel.
