If so, they must have gotten back together because they had a child in 1881.

Henry William Humphrey

Henry began working in the coal mines as a coal loader at the age of 12 years of age after his father died at an early age. Mary Pauline Russell indicates that he was too young to load coal so he was at first given the job of taking care of a trap door. He worked at Tennessee Coal Company from 1901 to 1908, Floss Coal Company from April 1908 to July 1924, Cambra Coal Company from September 1924 to December 1936, and finally at Southern Collieries Inc from February 1937 to April 1948. Beginning with his employment at Floss Coal Company, he was a member of the United Mine Workers Union Of America locals 2584 and 3164. Henry's social security file indicates that he earned a total of $13,222.97 in the years 1937 through 1945. He earned $1,787.57 in 1946 and $1733.12 in 1947.

According to his pension application, Henry retired early due to heart trouble. He received a United Mine Workers Union disability benefit of $27.20 per month beginning in April 1948 and lasting for one year. Henry began receiving his retirement pension of $100.00 per month beginning in November 1948.

Henry was a member of the Moose lodge and liked to whittle. A fancily carved walking stick with a carved opening with a wooden ball inside that Henry whittled in in the Museum of Appalachia at Norris TN.

At one point in his life, Henry contracted "blood poisoning" which would most likely be septicemia. Henry died on March 6, 1951 from a heart attack that was apparently caused by bleeding ulcers. Irene Humphrey-Bartholomew states that Henry died at a Knoxville hospital soon after she and her husband had left on a train for New York. They received a notice while the train was stopped in Somerset KY that her father had died and they had to return. They had just been in a serious car accident and Franklin was still on crutches. Stan Weaver states that Henry died at Scott County Hospital with a Dr. J A Raines of Lake City attending (death benefit application confirms the doctor's name). A $1,000.00 death benefit was paid by the United Mine Workers Of America - Local 3164 - on April 3, 1951.

William Henry Humphrey

Henry William Humphrey, 62 of Lake City, Rt. 2 (Fratersville), died early Tuesday morning. Mr. Humphrey had been sick for a number of years, but his death was sudden.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Louisa Weaver Humphrey; daughter Mrs. Irene Bartholomew of Lake City; son Carl Humphrey of Detroit, Mich; two brothers; Roy, of Richmond VA; and Hobart of Eagen, Tenn; three sisters; Mrs. Mary Reed of Russell, KY; Mrs. Lockie Hutson of LaFollette; Mrs. Delia Crutchfield of Caryville.

Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Fratersville Baptist Church with the Rev. Mr. McKamey and the Rev. Mr. Dugger officiating. Burial will be in Leach Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home is in charge.

Lockie's daughter Mary Pauline states that after her father Elijah's death in 1942, her mother always lived with her. She first lived in Eagen TN, then moved to Dayton Ohio in 1966 where she lived until her death. Lockie was in gradually declining health in her last few years and had been quite sick for two years vefore her death. Mary indicated that Lockie was a "plain talker".

Mary Pauline Russell indicates that Roy, Hobert, and Luda moved from TN to Mahan, WV between 1910 and 1920 when trouble in the coal mines made jobs scarce in Fraterville and Briceville. Hobert and Luda later came back to TN but Roy stayed in WV and later moved to Richmond WV.

Roy was found in the 1920 census in Fayette Co, WV and Luda was not living with him. She must have been living with Hobert at that time.

Mary Pauline Russell indicates that Hobert moved from TN between 1910 and 1920 with his brother Roy and mother Ludie due to a scarcity of coal mining jobs in the Anderson Co, TN area. Hobert and Ludie later moved back to TN. She indicates that both Grace Hickman and Sarah Hamilton divorced Hobert. She said that Hobert was a real cut-up and had a good personality.

Mary indiactes that while Hobert was married to Grace that he contracted Pellagra and his weight dropped to 70 pounds due to ulcerated bowels although he was 5'10" tall He was given a new treatment for the disease which the doctor told him would either cure him or kill him.

Lorene McManus indicates that when the mines closed in Eagan TN in the 1950s, Hobert moved to Dayton OH for a time but returned to TN. Hobert lived in the College Hill area of LaFollette, TN at the time of his death.

Dear Miss Irene:

Since I wasn't able to contact you by phone, I'm, writing you this note. First, thanks for your patience with us in regard to completing the interesting and impressive exhibit on your brother and your family.

I'm enclosing a draft of what I have written along with extra photographs I had made for you. We are still in the process of working on the exhibit of WWII, and I think it will be of great importance and interest to the millions of people who view it. I have spent a good bit of money reproducing the old photographs, etc. But, if you do not wish us to proceed, please advise. I can understand your concern, your anxiety, and your frustration perfectly. I, Too, had thought that it would have completed "a long time ago".

I hope your health is good and that you're feeling well. No matter what you decide, I'll always respect you and consider you as a cherished friend.

The Story of Cecil Humphrey, A Young Soldier from nearby Fratersville,
Who Made the Supreme Sacrifice for His Country

Staff Sgt. Cecil Humphrey was one of those American soldiers who survived the famous Normandy invasion of June 6, 1944. But he was killed a few weeks later, on July 11, at the age of 24, during the Americans' gallant invasion into France, just a few days before the Allies broke through the German lines.

The leather billfold displayed in this exhibit was the only item of Cecil Humphrey which was ever returned to his father and mother, Henry and Louisa Weaver Humphrey, who lived in the tiny and ill-fated mining community of Fratersville near Lake City in East Tennessee. The billfold was totally empty, except for a tiny photograph of a young girl. (His sister, Irene Humphrey Bartholomew, thinks she still has the picture.)

Cecil, his brother Carl, and Irene were born in Bricewille, but moved with their parents to Fratersville when they were quite young. Their father, Henry Humphrey, started working in the coal mines when he was 12 years old, after his own father had died. He worked in the Beech Grove mines, located a few miles north of the present town of Lake City.

The government informed Henry and Louisa that their son was buried in the U.S. Military Cemetery in St. Laurent, France, plot N., Row. 7, Grave 125. It is located 20 miles northeast of St. Lo, France. Irene recalled that the government was willing to return Cecil's remains to his parents' home afer the War. But Henry and Louisa refused the offer because of the Biblical passage which admonishes against "disturbing the dead.'

In December 1992, Irene called me relative to the two flags, the purple heart, and other memontos. Both her brothers were dead, she was "getting up in years" and she wanted someone to preserve these military mementoes. (Of course, Cecil was killed before he was married and was also childless).

Irene did not remember why her parents were sent two flags - - one with white stars, and the other with the bronze stars. Cecil was awarded the Purple Heart, but Irene doesn't remember when, or under what circumstances he was wounded.

Irene's brother Carl, (also deceased) also served in World War II and the two unwrapped medals (the Good Conduct and The Service (1941-45) were believed to have belonged to him (Carl).)

Irene has some framed documents which she says she will give to me.

(She has called again, Jan 193 & has other items for me - including a a large photo of Cecil W/frame.

Carl was in the service during WW II as an artillery man with the 77th infantry division in the Pacific theater. Carl worked at coal mines in TN before and after the service. Carl moved his family to Dayton in 1954. Carl worked for many years and eventually retired from employment with the city of Dayton, OH.

Mary Pauline says that Carl was the clown of the family and made everyone laugh. He contracted chickenpox from his granddaughter which then turned into shingles and his health rapidly deteriorated afterward. He couldn't eat, became dehydrated, and was ultimately on complete life support before his death.
