Nathan's son Hillery enlisted in the Union Army on Nov 8, 1864 at Clinton, TN to serve a one year tour of duty in the Civil War. He mustered into service at Nashville, TN on May 5, 1865 as a private in Company I of the 7th TN Volunteer Mounted Infantry. Captain Charles W Cross commanded this unit. Hillery's enlistment papers state that he was six feet tall, had a fair complexion, dark hair, and blue eyes. Hillery applied for and received a pension following the war.

In 1920, Hillery was living on Railroad Street in Coal Creek, TN. [2]
