520	Flora Alice Gault Lewis, age 87 and a native of Anderson County, Tennessee passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home with family by her side on Thursday, June 15, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Alonzo Gault and Flora Ellen Byrd Gault; husband, Earl C. Lewis; sisters Helen Morris, Ruby Jean Gann, Mary Ben-Eliezer; brother C. H. Gault. She is survived by her children: Anita Lewis Dixon (Lee Simon), Sandra Lewis Lambert (Richard Lambert), Dennis Lewis (Carla Freeman Lewis) and granddaughter Jessica Lambert. She is also survived by; sisters, Elsie McCarthy of Clinton, Beverly Disney (Herschel Disney) of Claxton; brother Frank Gault (Brenda Gault) of Knoxville; sister-in-laws, Melba Brantley of Martinsville, NJ; Nina Gault of Claxton; brother-in-law, Israel Ben-Eliezer of Atlanta and several nieces and nephews. Alice graduated from Clinton High School (class of 1947). She retired from First American Bank of Clinton. She and her husband were members of Zion Baptist Church in Claxton. Alice sang tenor in the choir and was known for her powerful and beautiful voice singing, "Oh Holy Night" at Zion's Christmas services. Following her husband's death, she moved her membership to First Baptist in Clinton. She was a hard worker, a great cook and an accomplished seamstress. She enjoyed doing daily crossword puzzles, feeding and watching hummingbirds, growing roses, watching Wheel of Fortune and spending time with her family and her granddaughter. Her favorite movie was Gone With The Wind. She enjoyed camping and traveling. She lived a full life and will be deeply missed. The family would like to recognize mom's daytime caregiver of three years, Ms. Deborah Nease and mom's evening caregiver of one year, Ms. Brenda Pemberton. Also, we would be remiss if we did not include a thank you to the writers and producers of "Days of Our Lives" for giving mom many happy years of viewing pleasure. :) Finally, the family would also like to say a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Oak Ridge Methodist Medical Center and Covenant Hospice for their compassionate care and guidance. She was a long-term member of Zion Hill Baptist Church of Anderson County and Eastern Star #369 of Andersonville, as well as an active member of the Halls Senior Center Bingo Club. 523	Frank and Cordelia Pollard were of German and Scotch-Irish ancestry. Their families migrated to the Kodak area from North Carolina in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Sevier County and Its Heritage by grandson, Bill Huffaker; pg. 232. Frank Pollard is mentioned in the Northview Homecoming 1986 program as having run a mill with his brother, Jesse in the mid 1920s. Frank Pollard was a member of the Beech Springs Baptist Church. (Beech Springs Baptist Church was organized 12 May 1883 with 18 original members. On the second Saturday in June, 1883, the first sermon in the newly organized church was preached by Rev. Wm McPherson. Frank Pollard is listed as being received by experience and approved for baptism. 529	FRIAR, RUTH JENKINS - 89, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2014. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, and mother who loved her family and friends unconditionally. Her grace, her generous spirit, her courageous approach to life, and her tenacious loyalty were all testimony to her love of Christ and His teachings. Born in Middlesboro, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Arlie and Vida De Marcus Jenkins. Ruth grew up in Kentucky and remained a loyal Kentucky basketball fan throughout life. In 1942, she graduated from Pruden High School as class valedictorian. Then, after graduating from Knoxville Business College, she worked as a secretary for the Clearfork Coal Company until she married Dan and began to raise her four children. Moving to Oak Ridge in 1954, Ruth and her family joined Robertsville Baptist Church, where she remained a member for sixty years. During those years she served in a variety of positions, including those of Sunday school teacher, Training Union teacher, Vacation Bible School director, Bible Study leader and WMU president. Additionally, she was a faithful member of the church choir for many years. She returned to work after all her children were in school, first working for the Anderson County Head Start Program. After a short time there she began to work for Martin Marietta at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In August of 1984 she was one of the first recipients of the Energy Division award for sustained contribution of excellence in the areas of administrative or technical support. She remained at ORNL until her retirement in 1987. Ruth loved nature. She treasured the Cumberland Mountains of her youth and often spoke of the trees, birds, wildflowers, and wildlife that as a child she learned to honor and respect. For years she made beautiful bouquets from the flowers she and her husband grew in their yard, particularly their roses. She was naturally curious about everything, which made her a voracious reader who pored over every article in the newspaper. Her love of books spanned the range from biography and history to politics, medical journals and her much studied Barclay Bible commentaries. Her love of learning was life-long. She was preceded in death by her father and mother; her husband, Dan H. Friar; her sisters, Gladys Hensley, Henrietta Jenkins, Bertie Bostic, and Joyce Nicely; and her brother, Arlie Gene Jenkins. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Breazeale and her husband Earl of Knoxville; her sister-in-law, Esta Arnold of Halls; and by her children, Deborah Friar of Oak Ridge, Dan H. Friar and wife Brenda of Ringgold, GA, Timothy Friar and his wife Rhonda of Knoxville, and Jeffrey Friar of Knoxville. She is also survived by her fourteen grandchildren, her seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, all whom she loved with pride and passion. The family would like to particularly thank the staff "family" at The Courtyards at Briarcliff of Oak Ridge for the care and love shown to Ruth and her family for the past three months. June 15, 1921: PERRY WILLIAMS, WELL KNOWN MECHANIC, DEAD Perry Williams, who was injured while operating a rip saw at the Long Planning Mill of this city last Saturday, died in the M. E. Hospital shortly after midnight last night following an operation performed Sunday evening. He was well known in the city and had been employed at the Long Mills for a number of years. His untimely death will be read by many friends with much sorrow. He leaves a wife and two children. 531	From the Knoxville (TN) News-Sentinel, 7 Mar 1993: Longtime Knox County educator Burl H. Underwood died Saturday at East Tennessee Baptist Hospital following a Friday stroke. A retired teacher and principal, Mr. Underwood had worked more than 40 years in Knox County Schools. He began his teaching career in Sevier County, where he met his wife, Emma S. Huffaker, when they were the only two teachers at the Underwood School in the Kodak area. She died in 1983. Mr. Underwood's last school assignment was as principal of Vestal Elementary School. He was the last president of the Knox County Teachers League and the first president of the Knox County Education Association. He also served as president of the Knox County Retired Teachers Association. He was active in the Republican Party and ran unsuccessfully in 1974 as a Republican for the Knox County Board of Education. Mr. Underwood had a lifelong interest in local history and genealogy. 543	Gerald Lynwood Shell Eagleville - Gerald Lynwood Shell, age 81, of Eagleville, TN passed away on February 16, 2018. He was born on September 8, 1936 to Flossie Mae and Millard Woodson Shell. After graduating from Michigan State and UC Berkeley, Gerry began his revolutionary career as an Environmental Engineer. He dedicated his life to researching, developing, and implementing technologies used to treat water and wastewater. The processes and equipment he developed are used in systems worldwide. Some of his largest and most successful projects took place in Mexico, Singapore, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. He was involved in the research and development of wastewater technologies at locations in over 40 states in the U.S. Gerry is survived by his loving and supportive wife of over 36 years, Carol Elizabeth Shell, and their two children Jennifer Ashleigh and Jonathan Lynwood. He is also survived by his former wife and lifelong friend, Bette Shell and their three children, Karen Crouch, Kevin, Mark, and five grandchildren. Gerry was the youngest of six strong-willed, successful boys. He is proceeded by his brothers Basil and Harold, and survived by brothers Jack, Don, and Bill. A funeral service and celebration of life will commence at Battle Mountain Farm in College Grove on Saturday, February 24th, from 2 - 4 PM. 547	GOODSPEED BIOGRAPHIES OF BRADLEY COUNTY, TENNESSEE H. J. PARKS, sheriff of Bradley County, was born February 12, 1842, in East Tennessee. He is the eldest of a family of four sons and three daughters of Andrew J. and Minerva (PRICE) PARKS. The father was born in East Tennessee, and was one of the first magistrates in that section. In 1838 he took an active part in removing the Indians westward. He was a farmer by occupation. His death occurred several years ago. The mother still lives; she is a daughter of Rev. Henry PRICE, a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the first circuit court clerk of Bradley County. The subject of our sketch received a common school education. At the age of seventeen he volunteered in Company E, Fourth Tennessee Cavalry, Federal Army. During three years of gallant service he was neither imprisoned nor wounded. After the war he engaged in the wagon-making business, at which he worked fourteen years. Two years he was a magistrate, in 1884 was elected sheriff, and has held the office since that time. He is a warm Republican, and a member of the Masonic Order and of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, to which his first wife also belonged. In 1872 he married Miss Mary E.
