    Other Events:

    • Occupation: UNDERWOOD FAMILY TANNERY Kodak, Tennessee The sight of an early tan yard can be seen on the south side of the Tuckahoe Creek Bridge on Douglas Dam Road. It was known to have been in operation before 1860 and continued production until 1920. According to records still in the possession of the Underwood family, the Tannery was probably started by William Ramy Underwood, who was born September 6, 1816, and died March 7, 1887. His son, Enoch Pleasant Underwood, born December 9, 1838, operated the family tannery for many years. Using native bark from the area, he prepared leather into shoes, harnesses, horse collars, saddles and other leather goods for market. The horse collars which he made, "the half Sweeny," were much in demand. Some of the tools he used are now on display in a Knoxville (TN) museum. Pleas Underwood was known for the fine leather he tanned. He also raised and twisted a fire cured tobacco, which he sold along with his leather goods from a covered wagon. His brother, William Alexander Underwood, drove a horse and wagon into Knoxville once a week to deliver goods. He had a Blacksmith shop at his home just south of the tan yard. Pleasant and his wife, Susan Pollard Underwood, had twelve children. He was affectionately known as Grandpa Coodle by his grandchildren. He was a Mason and charter member of French Broad Lodge #588. Pleasant died April 4, 1928. His brother, Alex, died September 30, 1923. Both are buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
