Sarah Ludie (or Luda) Bell.
Sarah Ludie Bell, daughter of William J Bell and Orlena Hunter was born either on October 10, 1866 as indicated in her memorial book or in October 1865 as indicated in the 1910 Soundex (which is very unlikely inasmuch as this was before her parents' marriage date). She was born in Andersonville, Anderson Co, TN.
Although her first name was Sarah, apparently she was known solely by her middle name. Her memorial book from the Martin Funeral Home in Lake City, TN lists her name as Luda although she is listed as Ludie in the 1900 & 1910 Soundex. Oral history indicates that her name was Ludie.
Ludie's steady boyfriend was Archaealus B Warwick before she married Frazier Humphrey on September 29, 1887 and she had the following children; Henry William, born October 7, 1888; Lockie Lottie Elizabeth, born June 20, 1890; Esta Cordelia Savannah (Delia) , born September 21, 1891; Harrison Monroe, born 1893-1894; Roy Frank McKinley, born September 19, 1896; Albert Wheeler Hobert, born September 6, 1898; and Mary Magnolia, born about 1901.
Ludie's memorial book sates that her husband Frazier died at the age of 38 on September 2, 1902. After Frazier's death, according to oral history, Ludie's oldest son Henry had to go to work in the mines at the age of 12 to support the family. Henry Humphrey's work history states that he began work in 1901 which conflicts with his father's 1902 death date. Henry would have been 12 in 1901 but almost 14 on the given date of his father's death. Frazier may have died a year earlier or perhaps he was ill and unable to work for an extended period of time. Elmer Humphrey gives a 1901 death date for Frazier and his source was the Anderson Co clerk. Frazier was alive and listed in the 1900 Soundex but not in the 1910 Soundex where Henry is listed as head of household and Ludie living with him with the rest of her children. Both Ludie's age and Henry's age are incorrect in the 1910 Soundex. Ludie is listed as being 81 (she was 43 (the actual 1910 census says 41)) and Henry was listed at being 18 (he was 21). A boarder, Andy Phillips - age 19 - single - coal miner was living with them in 1910.
Elmer Humphrey cites Typhoid Fever as the cause of Frazier's death and Mary Pauline Russell believes that it may have been Pneumonia.
Mary Pauline indicates that Ludie took in washing to help support the family. According to the oral history of Irene Humphrey-Bartholomew, Ludie was nearly killed in a plowing accident. Between 1910 and 1920 Ludie moved to Mahan, Fayette Co, WV with her sons Hobert and Roy and daughter Maggie. She was listed as head of household in the 1920 WV census with Hobert living with her. A boarder, Charlie Massingill (age 21 - coal miner) was also living with the family. Maggie had married and was living next door to her. There was also a family of Bells living next door. She later returned to TN with Hobert while Roy stayed in WV.
Ludie is remembered as being a somewhat stern, no nonsense type of person that could be somewhat mean spirited at times. Evidently, she was not fond of children later in her life also.
Ludie later went to live with her daughter Lockie in Eagan, Claiborne County TN and went to live with her sister Elzira for a time to take care of her when she suffered a stroke and ultimately died. She then moved back in with Lockie but at that time, Lockie was very ill with hemorrhoids that had almost turned into cancer and the family could not care for both Lockie and Ludie and Ludie was taken to the home of her son Henry in Fraterville, TN.
By this time, Ludie was unable to bend her knees and this caused significant problems for her. Near her death, Ludie experienced senile dementia which resulted in her having to be tied down inasmuch as she was very strong.
Ludie died on June 22, 1941 in her son Henry's home. As she died, she pointed upward and said "church". Her funeral service was held at Henry Humphrey's home on June 24, 1941 at 2:00 PM. Clergy was Lee Phillip and Lonza Dugger. She was buried in the Miner'sCircle Cemetery in Briceville, TN.
